The purpose of Centre Lumière is to fulfill the mandate of Jesus Christ in Haiti by contributing to the building and developing of His church in providing training and means for young women to become useful tools for the cause of Christ in their families, churches and communities.
Centre Lumiere was born in the heart of a German missionary named Luise Schurer. The Lord had giver her a desire to help the many needs of the Haitian women when she arrived with her husband in 1975. She recognized the need for training as well as work. In 1977, Centre Lumiere was opened as a training center for preparing teachers of Christian education and home economics. The four year program provides the graduates with assistance to start and develop similar schools in rural areas of Southern Haiti.
A home industry program was started to provide the graduates and the students with a small income for their livelihood. Sales from the home industry program make the school financially independent from outside support. More than 120 women participate in production and take pride in the high quality and beauty of their work.
